Taste of Nations!

Last week, the Student Leadership Group held a "Taste of Nations" event, where we served food from countries as diverse as Mexico, India, the Ukraine and Italy. We raised $369.20, all of which was donated to Free the Children, an organization devoted to helping children overseas and encouraging Canadian and American children to do their part. Thank you to all of the members of Student Leadership who helped organize the lunch, and to everyone who bought tickets to participate in this event!

The Aftermath- One Night Out

The first edition of One Night Out was a huge success; we raised $ 150.00, and all this money will be donated to Free the Children. During the event, 32 students came to learn about the challenges and difficulties of homelessness. Next year we hope for even more! During the event, we had a Quest for Survival, which was a blast! Everyone was divided into groups, who took turns rotating around different stations. The stations consisted of:

  1. An obstacle course, with feet or hands tied together (to simulate physical disabilities that are often suffered by homeless people);

  2. A shelter station, in which the groups had to construct safe shelters that could resist the elements (to show what some homeless people go through to feel safe during the night);

  3. The clothing station, where kids collaborated and created clothing that could keep you warm and dry (to simulate the difficulties of keeping warm and dry when it's raining);

  4. The scavenging station, which consisted of searching through a box filled with shredded paper, to find special coloured straws (this simulated searching a garbage can to find things to survive);

  5. The food and water station, where kids had to devise six ways of retrieving food and water as a homeless person, without breaking the law (which simulates exactly what is said).

After this, we made skits about the stories of homeless people, and everyone had a great time watching the unique stories everyone had to tell.

Even though there were some complications, everyone had a great sleep and loved the event! We hope everyone will come again next year, and that One Night Out will once again be a huge success!

Sincerely,

The One Night Out Team

Have you bought your One Night Out tickets yet?

Hello Jules Quesnel grade 6 and 7s,

This is a reminder that the student leadership event, One Night Out, is this Friday! It starts at 6:00pm, (eat supper before coming, or bring a packed supper; we cannot serve food). Students sleep overnight in the auditorium, no heating, until 8:00am the next morning, when we will eat a packed breakfast and go home.

THERE IS STILL LOTS OF ROOM! If you haven't bought your ticket yet, DO IT NOW!!!!!! If you've already got yours, tell your classmates! We are still selling tickets after school, or you can contact Mme Eve (room 401) if you have any questions. Not available Friday night? We appreciate donations, so you don't even need to spend the night!

Thank you so much for supporting our project!

One Night Out Event Update

Hello all Blog readers,

We would like to inform you that the One Night Event is approaching. On the 11th of March until the 12th of March, 2011, we are inviting all grade 6 and 7's at Jules Quesnel to come and expirience what it like to be homeless.

There will be many activities that are organised to educate students about homelessness. Activities include; quests for survival, several skits, story telling and much more.

Buy your tickets on Monday, the 7th of March, 2011. Each ticket is 5 .00$ and all the proceeds will go to charities that help the homeless. Our students leaders will be selling tickets outside the school after school ends. Please note that we are only selling 60 tickets, so first come, first serve.

Be prepared for sleeping over night at Queen Elizabeth Elementary, it will not have heating. the reason for this is we decided it will be easier to expirience homeless if we are actually living it.

So bring the following:
  1. One sleeping bag and pillow.
  2. One Flashlight
  3. Your dinner if you decide you want to eat there (please note, you cannot leave a mess.)
  4. Toilletries and other things you would need to spend the night away from home.

Try to bring very little belongings, and no electronics.

We hope we see you there.

-The JQ Student Leadership Team.

Experience Homelessness!

Calling all Student Leaders!

The One Night Out team is organizing a night filled with activities that will enlighten you and bring awareness to homelessness.

We will spend the night in the QE auditorium (or gymnasium) with no heating! We will sleep in sleeping bags*. A ton of fun and educational activities will be planned.

This experience would be from approx. 6:00pm on Friday night until approx. 9:00 am the next morning. The date is March 11th.

Now we want to hear from you! We are debating on whether to invite the rest of the grade 7-6's. Student Leaders will be given priority, but if there aren't many Student Leaders participating, the opportunity will be opened to the rest of the upper intermidiate students.

Stay tuned for more information about this event. Contact Mme Eve, (room 401) for questions and comments.

*Bring your own sleeping bag. Also, bring dinner and breakfast in a lunch bag.

Our Night At The Kiwassa House

It was a long drive there but it was worth it! We warmed the hearts of many people in need. Upon arival we were brought to a small kitchen and there we prepared dessert while the chefs finished making the main course.

Then we set the tables and greeted many people as they arrived. Once everyone was seated we served the main course; turkey with a side of potatoes and cranberry sauce. We cattered their needs offering seconds, and thirds to all.

We cleared and cleaned the tables and started serving dessert. Every person was offered a nanaimo bar or a triple cake, which were truly quite delicious.

From your generous turkey dollar donations we bought 9 turkeys. Three of them as well as a blueberry pie were used as raffle prizes and the rest was either cooked or stored for later use. Thanks to all of your donations we were able to present a check of 282.00$ to the Kiwassa House.

We drove home with the feeling of pride and accomplishment. Giving warms the hearts of everyone. We made a difference and that's what student leadership is all about!
